There are a lot of families who can look back after a diagnosis and recognize unusual behaviors as early symptoms of dementia. Some have to do with memory, and many have to do with what they thought was memory but was actually executive functioning. Because most people associate dementia with memory problems, it is easier to dismiss some early symptoms of new and unusual behavior episodes as something else.
Check out this page from healthtalk.org for more stories from families on the early symptoms:

Initially, both of my parents repeated themselves constantly, and reminisced about early in their lives. My dad had been diagnosed at that point, but not my mother. There was one significant time when I had taken her to visit her sister. The two of them were playing a simple card game, and I was just listening. I noticed that each time when it was my mother’s turn, that she could not grasp how to play the game, and would ask questions each time. That was when I really knew the extent of the problem.

A good read. It is true that Alzheimer’s is about so much more than memory loss. Those of us who have cared for someone with Alzheimer’s will be familiar with the symptoms outlined in this post.
